Habana Vieja / Old Havana
Base · 2–3 days
The essential colonial and port-city core: the four main plazas, churches, arcades, waterfront and dense side streets repay at least a full day. Stay here for atmosphere and immediate access, not quiet or polished infrastructure.
Vedado and Plaza de la Revolución
Base · 1–2 days
Twentieth-century Havana works better than Old Havana for a longer stay: broader streets, the Malecón, Hotel Nacional, music venues, university life and easier evenings. It is the most practical all-round base if you want nightlife without sleeping in the historic-core crush.
Centro Habana
Short stop · 1 day
The raw connective tissue between Old Havana and Vedado: grand but battered façades, crowded sidewalks and everyday city life rather than restoration-zone polish. Walk it in daylight for the street atmosphere, but do not choose it as a first base unless you accept noise and rough edges.
Regla, Casablanca, Morro and La Cabaña
Short stop · 1 day
Cross the bay for Havana’s best skyline view and the fortresses that explain why this was a major imperial port. Morro and La Cabaña are worth the trip; the 9pm cannon ceremony is mainly about the setting.
Miramar, Jaimanitas and Marianao
Short stop · 1 day
Western Havana is greener, lower-rise and more suburban, with embassy-era villas, Fusterlandia in Jaimanitas and Tropicana in Marianao. Treat it as a taxi outing rather than a walkable extension of the center.
San Francisco de Paula and Finca Vigía
Short stop · 0.5 days
Hemingway’s preserved house is Havana’s strongest literary stop, with the grounds and working environment giving more substance than central-city Hemingway bar rituals. Bundle it with Cojímar; alone, the transport commitment is hard to justify on a short trip.
Cojímar
Short stop · 0.5 days
This small fishing settlement east of the harbor is best for a coastal lunch, its modest waterfront and Hemingway association. Pair it with Finca Vigía rather than sacrificing a prime central-Havana day for it alone.
Playas del Este
Short stop · 1 day
Havana’s workable beach escape runs from Santa María del Mar through Boca Ciega to Guanabo. Go for a real sand-and-sea day or a couple of nights in Guanabo, but arrange transport before you settle in; this is not a resort strip with dependable logistics.

5 daysHabana Vieja / Old Havana (2 days) → Centro Habana (1 day) → Vedado and Plaza de la Revolución (1 day) → Regla, Casablanca, Morro and La Cabaña (1 day)
The minimum first trip that does not feel like a checklist. Base in Old Havana or Vedado, walk the historic core properly, then use taxis for the central districts and the harbor forts.

For a first-timer who wants Havana’s major districts plus one literary/coastal outing and one honest beach day. Keep a single city base; Finca Vigía and Cojímar belong together, while Playas del Este needs its own day.

For travelers who would rather linger over music, buildings and neighborhoods than bolt between sights. Vedado or Old Havana remains the sensible base; move to Guanabo only if beach time matters enough to justify changing hotels.
