Visas & entry
Most visitors need a Nepal tourist visa, available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and at major land borders; Indian citizens have different entry rules. Bring a passport valid for at least six months, a passport photo and payment method, and verify current visa fees, eligible nationalities and online-arrival-form requirements before travel.
Getting in
- Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu: The province’s real international and domestic gateway. Use it for Kathmandu Valley, onward flights to Bharatpur, and all serious Langtang logistics; stay near Kathmandu on the final night before an international departure rather than trusting a same-day road transfer from Chitwan or the mountains.
- Bharatpur Airport: The practical air gateway for Chitwan, about an hour or so by road from Sauraha depending on traffic. Short Kathmandu flights save a punishing 5–7-hour road day when they operate, but weather and schedule disruption are normal enough that it is not a risk-free connection.
- Sauraha / Chitwan road arrival: Most travelers reach Chitwan by tourist bus, private car or shared road transport from Kathmandu. The distance is modest but the journey is usually 5–7 hours; treat it as a full transfer day and book at least two nights in the park area.
- Dhunche / Thulo Syabru roadhead: The current overland access point for Langtang trekking from Kathmandu. Post-flood access has shifted away from the normal Syabrubesi gateway, with a longer alternative approach toward Lama Hotel; confirm the road and trail situation locally immediately before departure.
Getting around
Keep Kathmandu Valley as one base rather than changing hotels between Kathmandu, Patan and Boudha: taxis and ride-hailing are more useful than trying to make short map distances behave like short journeys. Bhaktapur, Kirtipur, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel work as day trips or one-night escapes, but traffic makes private cars worthwhile when time matters; public buses are cheap but slow and confusing for short-stay visitors. For Chitwan, choose the road for price or Bharatpur flights for time, with a buffer before international flights. Langtang is a dedicated trek with mountain-road uncertainty, not an excursion from Kathmandu.
Money
Nepal uses the Nepalese rupee (NPR). Cards work at better Kathmandu hotels, restaurants and shops, but cash remains essential for taxis, small eateries, local transport, tips, entry fees and trekking areas; use ATMs in Kathmandu before heading to Chitwan or Langtang. Tipping is expected for guides, drivers and trekking staff, while restaurant service charges do not always replace a small extra tip for good service.
Daily budget · NPR (Nepalese rupee)
- Value
- NPR 6,000–10,000 in Kathmandu Valley; NPR 9,000–15,000 in Chitwan
- Mid-range
- NPR 14,000–25,000 in Kathmandu Valley; NPR 20,000–35,000 in Chitwan
- High-end
- NPR 40,000–90,000+ in Kathmandu Valley; NPR 55,000–120,000+ in Chitwan
- Bands are per person per day, assuming two people share a room; exclude international flights and visa fees.
- Value covers simple guesthouses or hostels, local meals, buses, heritage entry fees and a basic Chitwan safari package. Mid-range means good boutique or 3–4-star rooms, better restaurants, taxis or some private transfers, and organized safari activities. High-end means heritage or luxury hotels, private guide/driver and premium Chitwan lodges.
- Chitwan is the budget disruptor: foreign-adult park entry is NPR 2,000 per day before guides, canoe trips, jeep safaris and transport. Do not compare a safari day with a Kathmandu museum-and-momo day.
- Private car and driver make sense for Dhulikhel, Namo Buddha or Nuwakot when time matters, but they raise costs sharply over buses. Inside Kathmandu Valley, changing hotels and relying on cars is usually poor value; choose one base and use taxis selectively.
- Alcohol, imported coffee, wine and Western food inflate a Nepal budget faster than rooms or local meals.
- Budget Langtang separately from city days: park entry is NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors, while guide/TIMS arrangements, road transport, meals, hot showers, charging and altitude-related price increases make trekking days materially dearer than Kathmandu days.
Eating well
- Seek out Newar food in the Kathmandu Valley’s older neighborhoods rather than relying on generic tourist menus.
- Use food stops as part of visits to the valley’s historic Newar cities and settlements.
Book before you land
Premium Chitwan lodges in Sauraha or Meghauli, especially for October–November and holiday periods · Langtang guide and agency-issued TIMS arrangement for peak trekking periods, plus Kathmandu accommodation before trek departure
- Do not build a tight Bagmati itinerary around road times: Kathmandu–Chitwan is commonly 5–7 hours, and mountain roads north toward Langtang need contingency days.
- At Pashupatinath, cremations and mourning are active religious life, not a photo opportunity; follow site rules and never photograph people at close range without clear permission.
- Dress modestly and remove shoes where required at temples, monasteries and homes. Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer monuments, including at Boudha.
- Avoid elephant-riding activities in Chitwan. Choose canoeing, walking, birding or jeep safaris with operators that do not sell wildlife encounters as guaranteed tiger sightings.
- Core-area Chitwan jeep safaris can close during the monsoon, commonly from around July into October. Do not book a rainy-season stay whose entire value depends on a jeep safari.
- For Langtang, carry enough cash, proper insurance and a flexible onward plan. High-altitude services are basic, prices rise with elevation, and road or trail conditions can change quickly.
Entry rules change — verify visa requirements for your passport before booking this region.
Season by season
October–November
Post-monsoon weather usually brings green hills, clear Himalayan visibility, pleasant safari temperatures and the year's most reliable Langtang trekking conditions.
First visits combining Kathmandu Valley and ChitwanLangtang trekkingMountain photographyWildlife and birding
This is peak demand for hotels, guides and trekking beds; Dashain and Tihar can make buses and domestic flights difficult to secure.
December–February
Kathmandu Valley days are generally pleasant but mornings can be cold, hazy and polluted; Chitwan is comfortable for walking and birding, while Langtang can be snowy and significantly colder.
Heritage cities and Newar foodChitwan safaris and birdingLower-elevation walksLower-cost, lower-crowd travel
Hill and mountain views are less dependable, and high-altitude routes require winter gear, flexibility and tolerance for basic cold lodges.
March–May
Spring brings warmer days, blooming rhododendrons and a second strong Langtang trekking season, especially in March and April, while haze increases across the valley and lowlands.
Langtang trekkingVillage and ridge walksSpring photographyTravelers who prefer warmer mountain conditions
Distant views can be hazy, Kathmandu gets dusty, and Chitwan becomes uncomfortably hot from April onward, sometimes nearing 43°C.
June–September
Monsoon makes the valley lush and quieter but brings persistent rain, humidity, clouded mountain views, road delays and landslide risk; Chitwan is hot and wet.

Do not build a short trip around tight road connections or Langtang, and core-park jeep safaris in Chitwan are commonly suspended during the monsoon, often from July until around October.
Events worth planning around
Indra Jatra · Usually September · Kathmandu, especially Basantapur and Kathmandu Durbar Square
A major street festival with Kumari appearances and processions; worth timing for if you accept dense crowds, blocked streets and difficult central-city traffic.
Rato Machhindranath Jatra · Usually May or June; exact dates and key chariot movements vary · Patan / Lalitpur
The chariot festival adds real atmosphere and congestion to Patan; confirm locally rather than structuring a whole trip around one predicted day.
Dashain and Tihar · Usually October–November; lunar-calendar dates vary annually · Province-wide, with the biggest transport effects in Kathmandu and on domestic routes
Dashain fills buses and domestic flights while some family-run businesses reduce hours; Tihar adds lights and festive energy but also busy travel days. Reserve transport well ahead.
Maghi · Around mid-January · Chitwan and Tharu communities in the Inner Terai
A meaningful time for Tharu culture; useful for travelers who want more than a safari, though it does not disrupt province-wide transport like Dashain.
What to eat
Bagmati’s food identity is not generic dal bhat: start with the Kathmandu Valley’s Newar cooking, which is ritual- and feast-oriented, richly spiced, and often built around buffalo and fermented foods. Treat eating as part of the old-city experience, especially in the Valley’s Newar neighborhoods, rather than defaulting to hotel-standard Nepali menus.
