Las Vegas Strip
Base · 2–3 days
The essential first-visit base for casino hotels, big-ticket shows, headline restaurants and late nights. Pick central Strip for the easiest access to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Park MGM; choose the north end if Sphere or luxury dining is the priority.
Downtown Las Vegas
Short stop · 1 night
Fremont Street and Fremont East deliver the older, louder, less polished version of Vegas: vintage casinos, neon, lower-stakes gambling and bars that are more independent than Strip lounges. Come after dark, but give it an afternoon too for museums or neon sights.
Red Rock Canyon
Short stop · 1 day
The closest convincing desert escape from the Strip, with a scenic loop, red sandstone walls and hikes that make a half-day feel worthwhile. Go early; this is the outdoor day that fits even a short Vegas trip.
Chinatown / Spring Mountain Road
Short stop · 1 day
A spread-out strip-mall corridor rather than a picturesque neighborhood, but one of Vegas's strongest food zones. Use a car or rideshare and eat deliberately—ramen, dim sum, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean barbecue, robata or late-night dessert—not generic resort fusion.
Valley of Fire State Park
Short stop · 1 day
The region's most dramatic desert day trip: intensely red rock, petroglyphs and short trails among sculpted formations. It deserves its own early-start day rather than being bolted onto Hoover Dam; avoid serious hiking in peak summer heat.
Boulder City
Short stop · 1 day
A compact, genuinely quieter town built around the Hoover Dam era, and the sensible lunch or overnight stop for a dam-and-lake day. Its small-town streets are the point; do not expect another Strip-style attraction zone.
Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Short stop · 1 day
Pair the dam's oversized engineering and Colorado River views with a Lake Mead shoreline or overlook stop. It is a straightforward car day from Las Vegas and works better as a focused outing than as a rushed add-on to Valley of Fire.
Arts District / 18b
Short stop · 1 day
A compact break from casino carpet: galleries, vintage shops, coffee, breweries and casual restaurants south of downtown. Visit in late afternoon, then continue to Fremont East; it is worth an evening, not a first-trip hotel move.
AREA15
Short stop · 1 day
An indoor immersive-entertainment complex whose main draw is Meow Wolf's Omega Mart. It is a strong heat-proof afternoon for families, teens or anyone who wants a strange, ticketed counterpoint to casinos.
Henderson and Lake Las Vegas
The calm southeastern alternative for golf, resort downtime and access toward Boulder City and Lake Mead. Choose it for quiet or a rental-home stay, not if walking to Strip shows and restaurants matters.
First Las Vegas: shows, desert and old Vegas
4 nightsLas Vegas Strip (2 days) → Red Rock Canyon (1 half-day, early start) → Chinatown / Spring Mountain Road (1 evening) → Downtown Las Vegas (1 day and night)
The right first trip: keep one Strip hotel base, see the spectacle properly, take one worthwhile desert outing, then finish with food and downtown neon. Do not dilute this with Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire.

6 nightsLas Vegas Strip (2 days) → Red Rock Canyon (1 half-day, early start) → Chinatown / Spring Mountain Road (1 evening) → Boulder City (1 lunch stop) → Hoover Dam and Lake Mead (1 full day) → Valley of Fire State Park (1 full day) → Arts District / 18b (1 late afternoon) → Downtown Las Vegas (1 evening and night)
For travelers who want the major desert days without changing hotels. Rent a car for the Red Rock–Hoover Dam–Valley of Fire stretch, then return it before the final downtown night.
Plan this routeEight-night deeper cut: city districts and desert overnight
8 nightsLas Vegas Strip (3 days) → AREA15 (1 afternoon) → Chinatown / Spring Mountain Road (1 evening) → Red Rock Canyon (1 full day) → Arts District / 18b (1 late afternoon and evening) → Downtown Las Vegas (1 full day and night) → Boulder City (1 overnight) → Hoover Dam and Lake Mead (1 full day) → Valley of Fire State Park (1 full day or 1 overnight if camping)
Best for repeat visitors, road-trippers and anyone who wants Las Vegas beyond casino corridors. The Boulder City or Valley of Fire overnight is for atmosphere, not convenience; skip it if desert driving after dark sounds like work.
Plan this routeSummer-proof Las Vegas
5 nightsLas Vegas Strip (2 days and late nights) → AREA15 (1 afternoon) → Red Rock Canyon (1 early-morning scenic half-day) → Chinatown / Spring Mountain Road (1 late evening) → Downtown Las Vegas (1 late afternoon and night)
Built around air-conditioning, pools, shows and late dinners, with Red Rock limited to dawn and the scenic drive. Skip Valley of Fire hiking in peak heat; it is not the clever summer add-on people pretend it is.
